A fun story today from Randy Miller about a letter that the timeless wonder keeps with him from his younger days.

It comes out when Moyer, a 16-game winner as a 45-year-old in 2008, is wrongly told how hard he used to throw in his younger days.

“It’s nothing to brag about,” said Moyer, who will be on the mound tonight at Miller Park when the Phillies go for a three-game sweep in their National League Division Series against Milwaukee. “I had a couple of people say this year, "Back when you were younger and threw 88-90 (mph). I said, "Wait a minute. I never threw that hard.’ That’s when I pull it out and I say, "You want me to prove it?’ It’s 82-83.”

Ha. Most people would go along with the revisionist history and bask in the glory of those 7 or 8 miles per hour.

The love continues over at ESPN where Jayson Stark gets all historical on Grandpa Moyer.

• He could become the oldest starting pitcher to win a postseason clincher — by five years. The current record holder, according to baseball-reference.com, is Curt Schilling, who was 40 years, 327 days old when he won Game 3 of last year’s ALDS sweep for the Red Sox.

• Moyer also could become the oldest starting pitcher to win any kind of postseason game — by more than two years. Roger Clemens was 43 years, 72 days old when he beat the Cardinals in Game 3 of the 2005 NLCS. Clemens, incidentally, is the only 43-year-old starter to win a postseason game — not to mention the only 42-year-old.

Rudi Johnson said Wednesday that running back Tatum Bell, the player the Detroit Lions waived to make room for him on the 53-man roster, took his luggage from the team headquarters on Monday.
"All this happened when he got released," Johnson said. "He came in to get some stuff out of his locker and that’s when he scooped up the bags."
A message seeking comment was left Wednesday with Bell’s agent, Kennard McGuire.
After being cut by the Bengals on Saturday, Johnson came to Detroit to work out for the team and meet with Lions president Matt Millen. During the meeting, which ended with Johnson agreeing to a free-agent contract, the two Gucci bags that he had gotten as a Pro Bowl gift were taken from inside the team’s headquarters.

On Tuesday, Johnson met with the Detroit media for the first time, and talked about Bell in a positive manner — saying they had discussed the Lions and that Bell had given him advice on the team and the city. More…
